Administering Antibiotics

Other important practical considerations when administering antibiotics:

  • Anyone administering antibiotics by injection should be suitably trained. Your vet or your local agricultural college can advise
  • Appropriate restraint at the time of treatment helps to ensure that dosing is effective and that stress to the animal(s) and risk of injury to the person giving the treatment are minimised
  • Make sure your dosing equipment is clean
  • Injection equipment must be sterile
  • Never share dosing equipment
  • Avoid needle stick injuries and discard needles to a dedicated sharps container
  • When administering oral antibiotics (tablets, syrups or liquids) to pets, always be clear on the instructions from your vet and never be afraid to ask for help or guidance from your vet or vet nurse
